Twelve weeks. One evening a week. Virtual.
Held Through It: A Group for New Motherhood
Starting Wednesday,September 2ndWhat to Expect
The early years of motherhood ask for everything, constantly. This is one hour a week that belongs to you, in a virtual room with women who are already carrying some version of it.
This might be for you
You are still explaining yourself to people who do not get it, and you are tired of the explaining.
You love your children and you are also furious a lot of the time, and both of those are true in the same hour.
You have been overstimulated since roughly the day you gave birth, and the noise is coming from inside the house.
You had a self before this. You are not sure where she went, or whether she is coming back, or whether you want her back in the same form.
You have thought about therapy, and the idea of starting from the beginning with a stranger is its own kind of exhausting.
No preamble required
You won't spend the session explaining the backstory. Everyone here already knows it.
Not just talk
IFS-informed work and creative arts therapy, built to use that same night, not just process later.
Matched, not lesser
Group therapy has matched individual therapy in outcomes for perinatal and early motherhood populations.
What the Hour Looks Like
Each session runs one hour. Maya opens with a short piece of teaching about what happens to a woman in the transition to motherhood, psychologically and neurologically, so that the experience has language attached to it instead of just weight.
From there the group works together on whatever the week has surfaced, using IFS-informed practice and creative arts therapy. You leave with something you can use that night, with your actual children, in your actual kitchen.
You do not have to perform. You do not have to have a breakthrough on schedule. Some weeks you will talk a lot and some weeks you will mostly listen, and both of those count as showing up.

About Maya
Founder and clinical director of Overture Therapy, a practice built for mothers. She sees women through pregnancy, postpartum, and the early parenting years, in individual therapy and in groups like this one.
Her work is grounded in matrescence, the developmental transition a woman moves through on the way into motherhood, which gets far less attention than it deserves considering how thoroughly it rearranges a person. She is also a registered drama therapist, which is where the creative work in this group comes from, and why the hour asks you to do something with what you are carrying rather than only describe it.
FAQs
Do I have to talk?
No. You will be invited in, never put on the spot. Plenty of women spend the first two or three weeks listening, and that is a real way to be in a group.
What if I miss a week?
Life with small children is what it is. Sessions are not recorded, for everyone's privacy, but you can come back the following week without having to catch anyone up.
Can my baby be with me?
Yes. Feed, hold, walk around, turn your camera off. This is a group for mothers and it is built to accommodate the fact that mothers are rarely alone.
Is this therapy or a support group?
This is group therapy, led by a licensed therapist, with a clinical structure behind each session. It is not a peer support circle and it is not a class.
What if nothing is technically wrong?
You do not need a diagnosis or a crisis to belong here. The transition into motherhood is a developmental event in its own right, and it deserves support on those terms alone.
Is this covered by insurance?
The group is self-pay at $50 per session. A superbill can be provided on request for out-of-network reimbursement. Payment plans are available.
Who can join?
The group is open to mothers located in New York state, with children in the first four years.
How do I know it's the right fit?
That is what the first conversation is for. It is a short virtual call with Maya, and either of you can decide this is not the right group without any awkwardness about it.
The next step is a conversation
A short virtual conversation with Maya so we can make sure the group is the right fit for you. Not a commitment, just a conversation.
